Themed Ceramic Rooms
LESSON BACKGROUND
Students were asked to create a three-slab constructed room based on a coherent theme. To begin, students sketched out ideas and were instructed to include even the smallest details of their design. As students finished their work, they were given a demonstration on slab construction, after which they set out to turn their drawings into a three-dimensional sculpture. Students were encouraged to focus on craftsmanship and composition as they created their sculptures. The construction process took two to three weeks, after which the pieces were bisque fired. The second half of the lesson consisted of glazing the pieces, during which students were evaluated on quality of craftsmanship and accuracy of color (if appropriate for the piece).

Example Student Work
EXCEEDS STANDARD
This student shows superior craftsmanship in the medium of clay. The design is innovative and creative, displaying personality and individualism. The glaze and paint are applied skillfully, with respect to the form of the sculpture. Originally, the student had used only glaze to color her sculpture. Upon thoughtful reflection, she did not like the end result and chose to revise her work. She added acrylic paint to sharpen the small details, lettering, and numbers. The end result showed much more skillful craftsmanship, along with evidence of thoughtful self-editing and evaluation. In all, the student has found a unique way to solve the visual problem and was very successful throughout the process of the lesson, and her end result. This piece was an Honorable Mention in the Rhode Island Scholastic Art Awards.

MEETS STANDARD
This work meets the standard of the project criteria. While the student uses skillful craftsmanship in construction and adequate craftsmanship with glaze, there are some parts where the glaze was not as carefully controlled. This student also left a bit of negative space on the interior of the room, where only a single piece of furniture stands. A stronger design would have added elements to occupy more space. The cutouts on the exterior wall are interesting, and the theme of the piece is coherent.

APPROACHES STANDARD
While this piece has a central theme, the construction is not skillful. The piece is heavy and it is evident that the student did not have strong control over the materials. The student's glaze is not evenly applied, resulting in bare spots on the ceramic piece.
