Chalk Pastel Flower Drawings
LESSON BACKGROUND
Influenced by Georgia O'Keeffe and her nature-inspired paintings, students took a closer look at natural objects and explored chalk pastels as a medium. There were several challenges presented to students in this lesson. Composition was the first topic discussed, as students were encouraged to pay close attention to positive and negative space on their paper. Students were instructed to keep flowers large enough to fill the space, as well as interact with all corners and edges on their 12x18" drawing paper. Students also explored chalk pastels, and were challenged to blend colors and create edges of their flowers without relying on a heavy outline. Finally, a contrasting background color was added to help their flowers pop. Interdisciplinary Connection: Science (Observation) R: Georgia O'Keeffe, Red Poppy. Oil on Canvas, 1927. |

Example Student Work
EXCEEDS STANDARD
This student produced a drawing that shows strong design sense and craftsmanship. It is evident that the student looked closely to reproduce the organic shapes seen in her flowers, while extending her shapes to the edges of the page. The student was able to blend her colors and values to create edges without using a strong outline. She also showed careful control over the chalk pastels, and was able to keep her edges crisp and clean.

MEETS STANDARD
This student produced a drawing that meets the standard of the lesson. The student was successful in composing an image that filled the space while producing some interesting negative space. However, the light pastels show some apprehension about pushing on the pastels to create a rich, dark color. As a result, her pencil lines stand out as a strong outline.

APPROACHES STANDARD
This student is approaching the standard. The observation skills are not as refined as the two drawings above, as seen in this drawing's flat appearance and lack of realistic shapes. While the student attempts to blend colors in the flower petals, there is a clear dividing line between colors with bare paper in between. This is due to lack of control over the material of chalk pastel. He attempts to create a contrasting background, but the radial design emanating from the flower tends to distract the viewer instead of making the flower stand out.
